Hell yes. I pre-ordered 10 minutes after it hit the site. I bought another 512 ram, too. Couldnt justify spending 450 on a gig. When prices drop, I'll probably get a gig. You and Rob should look into upgrading to atleast 512. I was talking to my friend in CMPUT and he has a student developer license. He said that running the final build on 256 is brutal as hell and not worth upgrading and that Apple is listing 256 min requirements but is going to upgrade everything to 512 base by the end of the summer. But PC2100 is pretty cheap. You can get a SO-DIMM of 256 for under a hundred bucks and 512 for 120ish. Stick with Crucial if you can. Pretty much the best stuff for a mac.
Well, you can install a few ways. Basically you will boot up your computer, put in the cd, then restart holding down C i think. It will boot from the disk and it will give you the option to upgrade 10.3 to 10.4 or you can format your harddrive and do a fresh install of 10.4. The plus to upgrading is you still have all your files and Apps etc. The downside is that there are often problems and conflicts with permissions (that are often unrepairable) along with your Library. Formatting gives you a fresh OS and probably better performance but you lose everything unless you externally back it up. Did you steal iLife from Rob? If you have (or if you haven't for that matter), I would suggest doing a format and fresh install. Then you can load iLife '05 from the OSX 10.3 DVD. However, the most important thing to do is to wait a few days before you install. You should let the guinea pigs on the interweb test the waters and see if there are bugs or if there are benefits to doing an upgrade or install.
Fuck. Again I missed something. Yes, it needs 6 gigs of total space but some of that will come from the space 10.3 is taking up. I'm not sure how much. How big is your HD? There has got to be something you can take off. About your ram, I'll just tell you now. You're generation of iBook only supports up to 640MB. The iBooks (and the 12" PB) only have one SO-DIMM slot for RAM. The rest is soldered directly to the logic board. Yours comes with 128MB built in then BTO 256MB in the DIMM slot. You can take out the 256 and put in a 512 stick and you will be maxed. Rob's comes with 256 on board and he can, as you mentioned, can put up to a gig DIMM in the slot to max out at 1.25MB, more than enough for the majority of Tiger's functions.
Have you guys ordered it yet? Because I would wait and see what the iBook performance is like. Rob will be able to run it quite well especially with the RAM upgrade. The only thing he won't be able to take advantage of is Core Image and unless he is gaming, he won't notice. But for yours, I would wait and make sure it is worth it.
